Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones poked some fun at themselves today (June 30) with a short YouTube clip which ran as an introduction to the Monty Python Live press conference.
The 93-second clip entitled "Mick Jagger introduces the Monty Python Live (mostly) Press Conference" begins with Jagger watching a World Cup soccer game with drummer Charlie Watts lounging beside him on a couch. "Oh no! Oh it was amazing!"
Seconds later an assistant appears and asks Jagger if he wants to have a look at the setlist for the concert tomorrow night. But Jagger is distracted with a newspaper article criticizing the stage lighting at a recent Stones gig. When Jagger asks where the lightning director (Patrick) is, the assistant reveals he's in London working with Monty Python "and the shows at the O2 (Arena)."
"Monty Python? Are they still going?" Jagger asks incredulously. The assistant replies the iconic British comedy troupe are doing 10 shows and if Jagger is interested in going to a show. "Ten shows! Wow, that's pretty amazing!" Jagger says before adding "it must be pretty expensive."
Jagger then adds the following lines which are golden. "I mean, who wants...who wants to see that again. It was really funny in the '60s." The assistant replies with the fact Python's first show sold out in 40 seconds. "Still, it's a bunch of wrinkly old men trying to relive their youth and make a load of money," Jagger quips. "I mean the best one (Graham Chapman) died years ago. Maybe back in the '70s it was fantastic, I mean it was the funniest thing. I mean, I mean you've seen it all before. I mean, I mean they put it all up on YouTube."
Watts, the traditionally quiet one of the Stones, remains silent in the clip, but is shown cringing when Jagger mentions YouTube. From there the assistant asks what songs Jagger wants in the setlist for the next gig. "Well we'll start with something everyone knows like 'Let's Spend The Night Together' and then we can move onto 'Get Off Of My Cloud' and then should hit 'Satisfaction' I think then," Jagger says referring to songs which date back as far as 1965.
The assistant then adds if the "Dead Parrot Sketch" should be included, which Jagger agrees to while focused again on the soccer game. The "Dead Parrot Sketch" is one of Monty Python's best known skits and aired during the first season of Monty Python's Flying Circus in December, 1969.
As for the Stones, the band's 14 On Fire world tour continues tomorrow (July 1) in Stockholm, Sweden. As for Monty Python, they took will be on stage tomorrow night at London's O2 Arena for their reunion dates.
