Rod Love, Ralph Klein's former chief of staff, has died.

Don Martin, CTV political analyst and host of Power Play, tweeted the news early Monday morning.

On his blog last month, Love revealed that doctors had discovered a tumour in his "upper body" while conducting a routine physical.

"Treatments begin very soon, and I expect to keep working for as long as I can, although it is inevitable that I will eventually be out of action for a few months, hopefully to emerge on the other side with a thumbs up," he wrote.

Love's political career began in the 80s, when he met Ralph Klein and worked on his campaign for Mayor of Calgary, reports Global News.

When Klein moved on to become Premier of Alberta, Love was at his side, serving as chief of staff.

Love also ran for the provincial Tories in 1992 in Calgary-Buffalo.

Don Martin told CTV Morning Live that the working relationship between Love and Klein was strong and unique.

""It was a very symbiotic relationship. One that I've never seen before and I've never seen since. You just don't see those types of relationships very often."

On Twitter, Albertans shared their stories and memories of Love:
