The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) has rescued dozens of puppies and kittens from a rural dump south of Calgary.
According to an AARCS Facebook post, rescue volunteers went to the landfill Sunday morning to check on the status of a couple of dogs, but once there they found 20 animals in need of help.
Included were a mother dog and her litter of six freezing cold puppies.
βShe had buried them down under a bunch of junk β they were filthy,β operations manager Katie Ayres told the Calgary Sun.
Rescuers also found a St. Bernard and a Shepherd-Rottweiler cross, as well as puppy who had been hit by a car and was hiding under some nearby steps.
A mother cat and her six kittens also needed rescue, after it was determined she had stopped feeding them.
The number of animals rescued last week skews high for AARCS, Ayers told CBC News.
Typically, they might take in about 10 dogs and 15 cats in a week, but last week they rescued 48 dogs and 40 cats.
The society currently has 362 cats and about 250 dogs in need of adoption. The are also seeking foster families for the rescued animals, as well as donations to help toward the medical care of the dog hit by a car.
