A Calgary taxi driver has been charged with the sexual assault of a passenger.
Investigators say Umar Khayyam, 35, was arrested on Friday.
A 22-year-old woman named Samantha told Global News she was taking a cab home in the early morning hours of January 25, when her driver began posing personal questions.
She said she became very uncomfortable with the line of questioning.
Instead of dropping her off in front of her home, reports CTV News, the driver pulled into the back alley and ordered Samantha out of the car.
When she refused to leave the vehicle, investigators say the driver pulled her from the vehicle and kissed her.
The woman was able to escape when the man slipped on some ice. She ran home and called police.
GPS technology, along with surveillance video from a nearby gas station, was used to track the cab and driver, reports 770 News.
“Our technical folks were able to geofence and isolate that area and that specific time of the offence between 3 and 5 a.m. on that Sunday morning, and we did get a hit on a particular taxi,” Marc Halat of the City of Calgary told Global.
Khayyam made his first court appearance Monday. According to 770 News, he is a temporary foreign worker who has been in Canada less than a year.
He was released on $800 bail and conditions state he cannot drive a cab, go within 500 metres of the alleged victim's home and must abide by a curfew, reports the Calgary Sun.
If convicted, he could face deportation.
Police have not named the taxi company Khayyam was working for
