Imagine not being able to see the Eiffel Tower because smog is obstructing it. Or how about having to squint to see the Basilique du Sacre-Coeur overlooking Paris?
Last week, The City of Lights was measured to be one of the most polluted cities in the world.
Starting today, Paris authorities have put in place 24-hour emergency measures to limit traffic after record levels of smog in the French capital. It will be decided later on whether or not these measures will apply later this week.
All cars with numbered plates that end with an even number will be banned from driving in Paris and the 22 surrounding regions.
Cars were also ordered to travel at a maximum 20 km/h in the city. The fine for ignoring the measures is €22 (approximately C$30).
To encourage people to leave their cars at home, public transport and parking were free.
