Defenceman Mike Weber called the reaction a "new low" in an interview with NHL.com.
"I've never been a part of something like that where the away team comes into a home building and they're cheering for them," he said.
The Sabres currently sit at the bottom of the NHL standings with 48 points, behind the Coyotes (54 points) and the Edmonton Oilers (55 points).
A last-place finish would actually be good news for the team — it means that they will have a 20 per cent chance of obtaining the first overall selection in the NHL Entry Draft.
Having such a pick would allow a team to draft Connor McDavid, a blue-chip prospect who is the consensus top pick in mock drafts on NHL.com.
The spectre of fans aggressively booing their own team is not without precedent, though it's rare to see them cheer their opponents.
The Edmonton Oilers were booed aggressively by their own supporters last year after they lost 7-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks.
