After much discussion, Edmonton city councillors voted Tuesday to strip the city of its 30-year-old slogan.
Councillors were 7-5 in favour of removing "City of Champions" from the city's "Welcome to Edmonton" signs in the next few months.
"We are in a post-tagline era," said Mayor Don Iveson, reports CBC News.
While many councillors said the slogan was outdated, some even called on the city to ditch the welcome signs altogether.
Coun. Michael Oshry, who brought the motion forward in September, said the change is integral to giving Edmonton a fresh look.
"We don't need a big splash entering the city, we just need something that doesn't look like it's 30 years old," explained Oshry following the vote, according to the Edmonton Sun.
Other councillors fought the change, arguing the slogan is a part of Edmonton's history.
"We don't need to turn our backs on city of champions," said Coun. Ben Henderson.
Although the slogan was penned as homage to city residents who helped each other following the Black Friday tornado in 1987, many link the "champions" slogan to the Edmonton Oilers' Wayne Gretzky days, which are long over.
In December 2014, Calgary Flames fan Jason Stang jokingly posted the "City of Champions" board on Kijiji as a dig to the Oilers' NHL standings.
The team, which won six Stanley Cups between 1984 and 1990, has not been in the playoffs since 2006.
