Jon Hamm finally won an Emmy for playing Don Draper and Dick Whitman on "Mad Men." It only took him eight years, and he himself couldn't believe the news.
"This was a mistake, clearly," said Hamm in his acceptance speech, after crawling onto the stage. "It's impossible."
"It's impossible" became Hamm's refrain during his emotional address, referencing how he was plucked from near-obscurity to star in the Lionsgate-AMC pilot back in 2007.
"It's incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here," he said. "[There are] people I owe an incredible debt, families who have chosen for some reason to take me in and be nice to me along this strange, strange road... My sisters and Cora and Jen, thank you all very much, I would not be standing here without you. Thank you very much for watching the show, and thank you for this."
Hamm also received his trophy from his longtime "30 Rock" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" collaborator, Tina Fey.
The "Mad Men" star has been on quite a journey this past year, having completed a stint in rehab for alcohol addiction back in March. The Golden Globe award winner also split from his partner of 18 years, actress and filmmaker Jennifer Westfeldt, earlier this month.
Speaking to his stay in rehab, back in March, the 44-year-old told Australia's TV Week that "life throws a lot at you sometimes, and you have to deal with it as much as you can."
"I've been very fortunate that throughout the most recent 24-hour period, I've had a lot of family and friends support me," said Hamm.
While it remains unknown if Hamm's mention of "Jen" in his acceptance speech is a nod to Westfeldt, People Magazine reports he skipped the Emmy red carpet to maintain a more private profile at TV's biggest event. However, Hamm still made several cameos in the telecast, including a memorable turn in host Andy Samberg's opening monologue. Samberg also parodied the final scene of "Mad Men" in a pre-taped broadcast spoof.
But, leave it to Samberg to keep the mood light following Hamm's nearly-tearful speech.
"I was pulling for [Kyle] Chandler, I just dig that dude."
