This week we introduce you to Celia Spenard-Ko (@ceeesk), a Montreal-based photographer and writer. She'll be answering our questions and sharing her photos all week.
Hi there! First off, it is an honour to be here among so much talent. My name is Celia Spenard-Ko and I’m a Montreal-based photographer and writer. I really enjoy the feeling of being truly inspired by something, so I try, as best I can, to give back and hopefully inspire a few in return. Instagram is a great medium for this.
Shapes and lines. Shapes and lines are what inspire me the most. Whether it’s an unusual building, the sun casting an interesting shadow, or the clash between a plant (organic shape) and a wall (man-made shape), I’m drawn to it.
When it comes to taking photos in general or for Instagram especially, it’s important to shoot what you love and not what you think will please others. In other words, don’t just do it for the likes. Find your vision, explore it and perfect it, those who share that vision will find you and, in time, the right likes will follow.
In high school, I wanted to study motion picture film, but the program at the university I wanted to attend required a portfolio that included still photography. I dug up my grandfather’s old 35mm Nikkormat and built a pretty decent portfolio with it. Once I graduated, the still photography stuck and I don’t regret the change in paths. That Nikkormat is still my camera of choice.
This was taken at my boyfriend’s family ranch in Porcupine Hills, Alberta. I think what I love most about this photo is the vivid sensory memory attached to it. When I look at it, I can still feel the dry cold air and hear the stillness of my surroundings, interrupted by the horses’ breathing and the snow compacting beneath their hoofs. - @ceeesk
I think @cb and @thismintymoment are both flawless and incredibly inspiring. Both focus on design, architecture, and have some killer line action going on. I especially appreciate how @cb will note the designer/architect of his subjects. I’ve discovered a lot because of it. I also really enjoy how @thismintymoment throws in some really beautiful portraits for time to time to mix things up a bit, but everything remains so refined and so true to his aesthetic. - @ceeesk
This summer I had a photography exhibition about football culture in the UK. It was called “Finding Football” (http://www.offthehook.ca/blog/finding-football-by-celia-spenard-ko) I’d like to make it more about football culture on a global scale and next month, I’m going to Rome as the first step in this direction.
