Hillary Clinton "absolutely" considers herself a feminist, and she is not afraid to defend her position.
In a new interview with Lena Dunham for Dunham's website and newsletter, LennyLetter.com, the Democratic presidential candidate says a "feminist is by definition someone who believes in equal rights."
She continues, stressing that identifying as a feminist does not mean "you hate men" or wish to opt out of "ordinary life."
"I'm always a little bit puzzled when any woman of whatever age, but particularly a young woman, says something like, ‘Well, I believe in equal rights but I’m not a feminist,’" said Clinton. “It just means that we believe that women have the same rights as men, politically, culturally, socially, economically.”
A video clip of the interview was exclusively obtained by Politico, and will be released in full when LennyLetter.com officially launches on Sept. 29.
But this is just the start of Dunham and Clinton's political partnership.
The "Girls" co-creator and star appears twice in Clinton's new "Join Women for Hillary" campaign video, which was released on Thursday afternoon. The video, which asserts Clinton's role as a prime advocate for women's issues, female health initiatives and economic opportunities, also features appearances by "Orange is the New Black"'s Uzo Aduba, fashion designer Vera Wang and other women in leadership roles.
Dunham's voice can also be heard reciting several lines in the piece, including "we are the coach and the cheerleader" and "we don't fit into boxes."
According to a Bloomberg Politics poll released on Wednesday, 33 per cent of respondents list Clinton as their first choice for a Democratic presidential candidate. She is followed by current U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who earned 25 per cent of the vote (and isn't officially in the race), which has a margin of error of 5.1 percentage points.
