A Massachusetts grandfather has built the tree house of our dreams! Over the course of two years, the licensed contractor built a 40-foot, three-story tree house for his two grandkids.
“I had a tree house when I was a kid, but it was basically a 4-by-8 sheet of plywood,” said grandad Jay Hewitt. “I never dreamed that a tree house would be anything like this.”
Supported by four maple trees, the fort includes a “mud room” on the ground floor, a living room-style area on the second floor, and a loft on the top floor. And of course, just like all great tree houses, the structure even has a built-in spiral slide.
Hewitt told the Sun Chronicle that he got the idea for the tree house before his grandkids – Jacob, 6, and Kayla, 4 – were even born. “At the time, I said I'd build the best tree house any kid ever had,” he said.
Hewitt and his family now use the fort as a venue to entertain guests and host family get-togethers.
Impressively, the 59-year-old’s grand construction has many of the same features as a new home. These include a bay window, a large deck, electricity and a ventilation system. To create the structure, Hewitt used wood from birch trees and leftover supplies from construction jobs.
Sadly, Hewitt and his wife are planning to put their home, and the tree house, up for sale. However, if the house doesn’t sell for the couple’s asking price, Hewitt is already thinking about making additions to the fort.
“I plan on adding a bridge going to another platform about 20-feet away. [And] I plan on putting a deck up on the roof," he said. "So stay tuned."
