A B.C. soccer team is raising money for a teammate whose throat was slashed during a sexual assault earlier this month.

The 21-year-old woman was attacked by a man she knew at an apartment in Surrey on Feb. 7, said RCMP. He allegedly slit her throat, stabbed her numerous times and tied her hands with a jump rope.
She managed to escape the attack and was discovered in the hallway by the building's manager Adel Masoud, who told CTV News that she was bleeding, and naked from the waist down.
The victim, who cannot be named by law, is recovering at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, where she is expected to remain for about a month.
"She's the strongest person we've ever met."
As a refugee claimant who arrived from West Africa last year, she has no family in Canada. The SFC Rangers soccer team is rallying around her to ensure she has a support system.
"She's the strongest person we've met," teammate Simrit Parmar told CTV News.
The group started an online fundraiser to support her recovery. It collected over $17,000 toward a $20,000 goal in a single day.
“She told us that she hadn’t cried since she’d been in the hospital, but yesterday when I showed her the [fundraiser] that was the first time she cried,” said Parmar.
Kris Kelly, 22, has been charged with aggravated sexual assault, attempted murder and unlawful confinement in connection with the incident.
