Chrissy Teigen Baby Girl: Model Faces Backlash For Choosing Baby's Sex

"I think I made a mistake in thinking people understood the process better than they do, which is my fault."

It’s no coincidence Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are having a baby girl. In fact, the mom-to-be revealed to People that she chose to have a daughter when the couple underwent IVF treatments.

“I’ve made this decision,” the model said. “Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.’”

Previously, the 30-year-old revealed that she and Legend struggled with fertility issues for two years prior to conceiving. In October, Teigen officially announced the couple was expecting on Instagram, and in December, she revealed the baby’s sex for the first time.

So why a girl? Teigen says she wanted to see her husband raise a daughter.

“I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. That excited me,” she explained. “It excited me to see… just the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond. A boy will come along. We’ll get there, too, so it’s not like we really have to pick.”

While Teigen and Legend couldn’t be more excited to welcome a daughter this spring, critics were quick to bash the Sports Illustrated model for selecting her baby’s gender.

“What is that difference though? i've already created embryos with a doctor. only after must it be random,” she initially responded on Twitter. “This is all so interesting. I said it so casually because i'm just open. I'm around so many open-minded people & forgot it's controversial.”

Hours later, the model took to Twitter again to clear up some misunderstandings about gender selection and give her final word.

Despite the backlash, Teigen is excited to see what kind of parents she and her husband Legend will be.

“We’ve been together so long, and sometimes we look at each other and we’re like, ‘I know everything about you and you know everything about me,’ but we have no idea what we’re going to be like as parents,” she told People. “I think it’ll be really fun. I’m excited.”
