Toronto Fashion Week kicked off at David Pecaut Square on Monday, marking the start of the fall/winter 2016 presentations for several Canadian designers.
Though it was a bit of a rainy day, that didn't stop Toronto's style stars from heading to the tents to check out all the great fashions our homegrown talent had to offer.
And day one did not disappoint. With Mikhael Kale, Narces, Christopher Paunil and Sig Neigum showing, it marked a strong day one for the bi-annual event.
Here are all the highlights from Toronto Fashion Week day 1:
Slips all around at Mikhael Kale, though the actually slipping was rather unfortunate. Blame the coffee spilled on the runway before the show, which led to frantic cleaning of the runway and then, alas, models sliding and falling on the freshly-cleaned floor (the plastic shoe coverings probably didn't help, but we have to say, they did look pretty cool). All slips aside, Kale showcased a strong collection, which we're sure would be Gigi Hadid-approved.
Yes, fashion people do eat, and anytime there is food during fashion week, it is much appreciated. Le Chateau was mindful of this, bringing in a food truck with crepes by Cafe du Monde and offering them to anyone who tweeted out a photo with the hashtags #lechateautfw and #capturelemoment.
In shoe form, that is. Yes, Kendall and Kylie Jenner's eponymous shoe line made an appearance at Christopher Paunil's show. They really make it easy for us to keep up with them...
Narces' show opened with an Asian theme: background music included. Perhaps designer Nikki Wirthensohn Yassemi took inspiration from last year's Met Gala, however, of all the models donning the Mandarin-collared gowns, only one was visibly Asian. That detail aside, the show closed with some beautiful, dreamy white dresses that we've come to expect from the brand.
Also capitalizing on bridal was Christopher Paunil, whose show also closed off with a few wedding gowns.
Arguably one of the most highly-anticipated shows of the week was Sid Nigeum's fall 2016 collection. However, showgoers were given a presentation rather than a runway show, which was a surprise to many. Neigum tells The Canadian Press he wanted to "refresh the presentation of his latest line for the Toronto audience." (Note: he previously showed the collection at London Fashion Week.) While it was a great way for everyone to get up-close-and-personal to the garments, we did wish we saw the pieces in motion.
Another perk of a presentation? Getting to see the hair and makeup much more closely than you would if the models were walking down a runway. This graphic eyeliner designed by Maybelline New York Canada's lead makeup artist, Grace Lee, was our fave beauty look of the night.
As for hair, our fave look was the messy, effortless bedhead at Mikhael Kale, created by Jorge Joao, Redken Canada's lead stylist. If we really did wake up like that, we'd be happy.
