A Drumheller, Alta. woman is facing charges after allegedly stealing money from a fundraiser to support a young man's battle with cancer.

Twenty-year-old Brandon Hall was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2015 and has since been undergoing treatment, according to an RCMP statement.

Local businesses in Drumheller held fundraisers in April to support Hall and his family.

But in June, RCMP received a complaint that a "substantial amount" of cash from a silent auction had never reached Hall's family.

Police announced on Monday that Ashley Fredrickson, 33, has been charged with theft under $5,000.

Fredrickson was a friend of Hall's parents and organized the silent auction, according to the Calgary Sun.

“It's mostly just disappointing because she was so adamant about helping my family," Hall said in an interview with CTV News.

“It has added so much stress to an already stressful time, and we didn’t need that extra stress,” Crystal Hall, Brandon's mother, told the Sun.

Fredrickson is due to appear in court on August 29.

Hall's aunt has started a GoFundMe page to pay for the family's medical costs.
