Bleeding After Sex: 6 Reasons Why And What To Do About It

And why you might want to get it checked out.

Finding blood in your bed or on toilet paper after a night (or morning) of hot sex can be alarming — especially if you aren't on or near your period.

Bleeding and spotting after sex happens to many women at least once in their life, but frequent postcoital bleeding could be a sign of something more serious. In the video above by Knowmore TV, we discover six reasons why you might notice bleeding after sex.

While postcoital bleeding is common among postmenopausal women due to vaginal dryness, younger women can experience bleeding as a result of many other conditions such as an STI/STD, vaginitis, cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis and even cancer.

According to Healthline, 11 per cent of women diagnosed with cervical cancer were initially treated for postcoital bleeding.

Though postcoital bleeding tends to be linked to other medical conditions, the good news is many of these conditions are treatable. Antibiotics can clear up many infections and lubricants can eliminate vaginal dryness, reducing the risk of vaginal tearing and bleeding.
