The best start to any outfit is having flawless skin, but how to achieve it?

I know with my own skin sometimes it is oily and other days it is dry. Combine this with aging skin and it can seem like a challenge to have smooth looking skin.

Recently, I was lucky enough to speak with Lori Taylor Davis, Global Pro Lead Artist at Smashbox. Lori shared with me the top tips that everyone can use to create flawless skin.

What are the most common mistakes when applying foundation?

Most women will almost always start applying foundation on the forehead all the way down to the chin, applying everywhere using too much foundation. I believe the most modern way of applying foundation is starting in the middle of face, working out and up, in very sheer layers, skin mimicking skin.

What are the top tricks to reduce dark spots?

Focusing on a having concealer or a concealing product. Really using the proper beauty tool with your product. For example, using a concealer brush with concealer. If you are a concealer girl, focusing on those areas and setting with a little bit powder is one option or the real way to mimic, reduce dark spots with CC Cream application, which helps fade dark spots over time.

What kind of foundation is best for aging skin?

Foundations that tend to mimic radiance, natural-looking skin. Sometimes we think coverage tends to be better where coverage can actually age us, but something too matte can make us look older.

What are some of the top tricks for flawless skin?

Working in sheer layers, starting at the center of the face and working your way out. I love a little bit of radiance in any foundation that always tends to mimic naturally hydrated skin. At Smashbox here in our studio it is really important skin photographs like skin. A little radiance, sheer layers, picking one feature for full make up and focusing on the eyes, lips or cheeks. Not looking overly made up. Women start out in life loving to wear tons of makeup in our teens and 20s lots of makeup. As we gain confidence the makeup layers come off and as we get older we learn how to focus on a key way to present ourselves.

Really not hiding behind makeup anymore and working with what we may consider a flaw, i.e. women who have freckles, let them shine through or a crooked smile; it's okay not to hide behind makeup.

When skin is radiant it is like having a soft focus. Back in the day to catch a soft focus used oil on a camera lens, capturing a diffused fuzzy way of looking at someone.

Imagine that radiance where it is going to diffuse and bounce light off of your flaws. Lines or something like that, anything light reflective will bounce light off, less focus more radiant.

What are some of the biggest mistakes that people make trying to get flawless skin?

Applying makeup like a mask from forehead to chin, using too many products and not choosing a feature to focus on.

I really love trends but picking things are not for everyone. The type of person who has an easy lifestyle, it is fun to play and wear colour like a brighter lip, really picking things that are you, really bringing your best shape to your eyes and face, your unique you.

Makeup is about enhancing not masking features. You are enhancing not covering your features. When applying makeup pay attention to what you are seeing in mirror. Don't try to apply full layer of everything off the bat, don't wear every trend.

Like in fashion, they say, look in the mirror and remove one accessory.

Like in beauty, take the time to look in the mirror and put the product down. Build gradually and think about your skin.

Good everyday makeup is perfect skin, a lip, liner and lash. I tell my clients if you have 10 minutes for your makeup, seven minutes should be dedicated to skin, because if you get skin right, everything will look better. The perfect skin, add lip, liner and lash and you are good to go.

Any other tips?

Curl your lashes and pay attention for to your brows.

I am going to use these helpful tips as I continue to expand by beauty ideas this spring! I love the idea of smooth glowing skin.

Your suggestions are always welcome, as I continue on my journey to live life to the fullest. Let's have the very best 2015!
