Why are parenthood and professionalism so often at odds? In the almost seven years that I've been a parent myself, I've struggled with this dynamic. Having to call in sick because your baby is puking or your sitter didn't show. Hearing whines and whoops as the soundtrack during business calls. These sorts of things are highly frowned upon in the business world.

I love to host dinner parties, but I really don't like doing all the work. My husband is this huge foodie. I make a gourmet meal almost every day. My mother is visiting this week. Last night, after putting my son to bed, I lowered my pregnant self onto the sofa and revved up the DVR. Mom said she didn't care what we watched. So I clicked on the newest episode of AMC's "The Walking Dead." As the credits rolled, she stared at me in horror. "This is your favorite show? Isn't it about, like, zombies? How could you possibly relate to or enjoy a show about zombies?" Quite easily, in fact.
