Why I Don't Want to Flaunt "It"

Posted: 11/09/2012 10:53 am

I've been wrestling with this trend of adding leggings to every damn outfit. Don't know about that werrd shirt? Add leggings! That'll fix it. Don't know what to wear out tonight? Add shiny leggings -- that's so dressy! Don't know what to wear to your family dinner? Um ... leggings?

I don't love the look of leggings, because I'm not sold on women baring our asses for the viewing pleasure of strangers. To me, leggings make a woman look like she is in the privacy of her own home. I don't particularly like people dressed in underwear as they head to work, either. And that's what leggings look like to me.

I guess the feel of being cozy and at home is why women love them -- "they're so comfy" -- and also why men love them -- "You can totally see that chick's ass ... awesome." And, oh yeah... you can see her labia, too. Awesome?

See, that's the thing with this hyper-sexualized era we live in. Somehow it's become completely normal to dress in what 15 years ago would have been considered the outfit of a street worker. No disrespect to women working the sex trade, but I don't know if we all need to show it all, all the time.

The rise of pop yoga culture and yoga gear as streetwear has certainly contributed to the thinking that skintight everything is the way to go. I don't buy it, but I'm stuck in this era and need to adapt.

I have been told countless times that I should "show it off" more, and that I am "hiding" my body because I favour loose clothing that doesn't showcase every nuance of my figure. But I like the freedom of knowing my figure is not on display.

I like the sense of secrecy I carry around knowing my body has magical curves that are only mine to witness. I feel beautiful knowing my body is my own, and not some stranger's entertainment. I don't like being hit on, although I am told I am supposed to thrive from some stranger's gaze as an indication of how "hawt" I am.

The pressure to flaunt my figure as a rapper and performer and modern woman is HUGE.
So I am trying, not very gracefully, to wear leggings, and enjoy them. My lanky frame looks silly, if you ask me, but I'm trying to embrace the trend.

I'm trying to feel what other women are feeling, and be a part of something current rather than stuck in my love of all things loose and rugged, functional and raw. Linens and wools, denims and silks; these are my dream fabrics and do not a legging make.

But right now, this week, I am gonna rock a super synthetic, ultra stretchy pair of leggings. I'll give it a try. But not without wearing something long enough overtop that my ass -- and labia -- are not some stranger's entertainment.

I think it's great that Kinnie is open to step away from the idea of "hiding" behind clothes in attempts to understand the comfort many women feel in more revealing (however the individual defines "revealing") clothing. Whether its for comfort, fashion, sex appeal - the reasons are always up to the individual.
There IS a lot of pressure on women in the public eye to be a certain way, look a certain way, act a certain way - well all women in general really - so in truth we all just need to support each other thru our journeys...and be kind to each other.

I think it's sad, the things we "require" of celebrities these days - even of those with depth and talent such as Kinnie Starr.

So you don't want to flaunt it? But the final conclusion of this post seems to be, "Oh, ok, I'll try flaunting it." This post on "body image" is a little ironic, as a quick Google search has made it clear that the writer has no problem "flaunting it" for magazines.

Alida Kinnie Starr has done one racy photo shoot in twenty years of her career. When I was a young fan I would look her up in magazines to only find her in baggy army pants . It was not until 2010 that she did her first photo-shoot that showed her body.

Hence the saying "leggings are not pants". So you say the the pressure to flaunt your body is huge, which is why you're going to give leggings a shot? I mean, I'm no rising hip hop artist, so maybe I don't understand the same pressure, but I just stick with I feel comfortable with. There is a little irony in reading post about body image and doing a quick Google image search on the author only to find out their idea of 'revealing' or 'hyper-sexualized' is a little different than mine.

I think it's time to move the discussion about what women wear in public away from the "a woman only wears this because a man wants her to" notion. Surely women realize the power they get from wearing certain types of outfits. (Note to anyone who may reply, that isn't an excuse for men to behave improperly).

1. No sex worker I know wears leggings to work. Just, no. Also, there is NOTHING WRONG with looking like a hooker.
2. What works for you is great, but why the judgmental tone and assumptions about what women wear and WHY we wear them? Just because something flaunts my body doesn't mean I am wearing it for attention.
3. This is verging on blaming women for unwanted attention from men, when the real issue is bro/rape culture and society's view of women's bodies as property. Whether or not my labia is visible is not really relevant when some dude's harassing me.
4. Please don't assume that simply because a woman "shows it off" she's just a pawn of the patriarchy with no agency.

I've mostly gotten used to seeing women in leggings, but it can still catch me off guard. Especially when paired with a winter coat, the contrast makes the naked look really pop out at you. They certainly look far more normal on others than they feel when I try to wear them myself.

Personally I felt more comfortable with big baggy pants and a tight top. (Remember that style? Sigh, my favourite Rihanna look.) I guess this is just the reverse. Think I'm going to wait it out though - nothing wrong with keeping the style you like!

I love my leggings... UNDER a skirt or dress. I cannot bring myself to don them with a "big tee shirt" though, that was big in the late 80's or early 90's and brings back bad memories. There were even little plastic disks you could thread your tee shirt through at your hip that would cinch the bottom of the shirt tight, presumably to show off your sweet 80's/90's butt and to show you were above just tying the shirt into a knot.
Enjoy your leggings in any way you feel comfortable :) I for one, applaud you keeping the labia under wraps... Its nice to know I am not alone in wanting to keep the exact shape of all my bits to myself.

right on, Kinnie!

I hear ya sister! Good luck with the attempt at leggings. I still haven't been able to embrace them but I don't have a general rule against them either...much of the same qualms as you mentioned.
