The interior of a room can change dramatically by the simple addition of a pillow, a piece of art, or a colourful splash of a throw over a sofa. A once drab environment is suddenly charged with the energy of a colour. The boring lobby becomes enticing; the jittery space becomes calming; the bedroom, romantic, all through the use or addition of a different colour.

Throughout my life, I have worked and studied the powerful influence of colour and how it defines energy. I apply that understanding today with leading designers, decorators, art directors and architects who consult with me to help achieve a client's objective.

Every colour plays a pivotal role in our energy field through our aura, and becomes not only a visual experience, but also an emotional one. Colour is the most important tool in our personal toolbox. How we use and understand color can mean the difference between whether we are healthy or sick, happy or sad, and even how we respond to situations.

Before I can offer suggestions, I make sure my clients are educated on the basics of colour as it relates to energy and vibration. It's also important that they learn the meaning of each colour and its connection to the intention they want to embrace. Identifying why one colour works in a particular space, but not in another, is the solution to the design puzzle. The goal is to learn how to work with colour to change the energy of a room to healthy advantage.

Below are three quick colour design tips to help you create the desired results for your room or space.

1- Choose colours that make you feel an appropriate connection to what you will be doing in the room. This will promote better emotional energy.

2- Stay clear of colours that are too bright, as they tend to bring attention to what you don't want. Mix in subdued colours to encourage balance.

3- Use black or white as accent borders for a sense of security. This single act helps to define the space.

By applying these three basic colour tips, you will be able to embrace a mood that is more suitable to the intention of the room and those occupying it. It may take some experimenting in the beginning, but it will be well worth it when you feel how colour can shift your thoughts and shape your reality.
