The Week That Was: In With the New Year (and Editor)

Posted: 12/30/2012 12:00 am

The approach of the new year got all of us thinking about the past 12 months' highlights -- from successes in cancer research to memorable Justin Bieber moments. But for me, personally, the final days of 2012 were a sneak peak at an exciting new professional beginning: taking the helm as managing editor for blogs here at HuffPost Canada. In three working days alone, I saw news stories, photos and blog posts fly in on topics as diverse as the Idle No More movement, lingerie-clad models and Boxing Day sales. HuffPost is a frenetic and lively conversation, and I look forward to both helping steward it and diving headlong into it myself.

In an attempt at introduction in the meantime, though, this is what has impressed me most so far: HuffPost bloggers do not all sing from the same song sheet. While one calls out the NRA, another insists that guns aren't the root of our violence problem. While Liberal leadership hopeful Justin Trudeau shares the words he delivered to an Islamic conference, terrorism expert David B. Harris sounds the alarm about the company the Liberal politician is keeping at the same event. While Naomi Klein makes a passionate case in support of Chief Theresa Spence's hunger strike, media critic J.J. McCullough takes a cynical look at coverage of the aboriginal issue -- and wonders if it isn't being co-opted for commentators' own purposes.

That diversity of opinion is a large part of what drew me here, and I suspect it's part of what draws you too. We need to hear a range of voices to form our own opinions and challenge our own beliefs. And this busy, bustling, opinion-filled site is the place to do it.

I, too, find opposing takes on the same topic interesting and refreshing. People blog to rant their personal viewpoints, and share their opinions on issues that they deem worthy. To be completely passionate about a topic such as gun control, and then to read someone else's post about why gun control is NOT the real root of the violence problem is good for our brains-- I think it makes us more intelligent and worthy of participating in hot conversations as such.

Good luck as the new maaging editor! I look forward to reading your thoughts...

re;lively conversations", yes indeed, that is exactly what I like about this page,..also that the varied opinions are,for the most part, not about "winning" but seem to be real open diologue,These conversations are just as important as the stories and sometimes, more so,..so,"please ma,am, we want some more"[dickens],.well, it is paraphrased,Alec was correct btw, for the now? this is "the one",.. it moves around, which is an interesting thing in itself for those involved in growing the tool,,

You repeat the words diverse, diversity of opinion, range of voices - I for one am not interested in the voices of the right - Pierre Polievre, Baird and the neanderthal Toews which is setting back correctional policy to Dickensian times and the rest of that gang talk nonsense in my opionion and don't need this site to promulgate their ideology. I suspect you have been given marching orders to try to broaden the base but we aren't interested.

Speak for yourself. I think strong voices from the left and the right are what makes this site great.

And a warm welcome to you, Marni. I don't always agree with you, but like the way you write and think.
