Liberal Convention Diary: Day One

Posted: 01/12/12 06:26 PM ET

Goodness, what Liberals will do for the cause :-).

I've just arrived in Ottawa after what became an almost 6-hour drive from Toronto, through -- yes -- rain, sleet AND snow. But it's worth it -- I am very much looking forward to this Liberal Biennial Convention. There are more delegates coming here than to the past NDP and Conservative conventions combined -- right away, that's a great sign.

And this is a quick installment, because already there are people to see, things to discuss, and probably a little fun to be had. This evening is the big tribute dinner to honour Allan J. MacEachen. It's a sold out event, with at least two former prime ministers attending.

Tomorrow morning I will be speaking to the young Liberal biennial meeting. We'll let you know all about it tomorrow.

Stay tuned...

it's an interesting choice to have bob rae be the leader, considering his record in ontario with the ndp. but who else is there? with the younger voters not showing up as much as older people, chances of an anger vote rise dramatically. personally, i would go with trudeau if i was a liberal member. you can't really blame the son for the father (though i disagree that trudeau's decisions were mistakes necessarily) and there are millions of canadians who actually liked his father. remember, despite his "mistakes" trudeau was re-elected with majority support.

Bob Rae can't wait to be leader so will this convention be a practice coronation. The biggest thing the Liberals have to be concerned about can Bob Rae carry Ontario. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of people having that question on their minds.
As for western Canada is their anyone that can bring the west in from out of the cold. Please,Liberals don't send Son of a Trudeau out there to get the job done. Everyone that was alive in the late 70's and early 80's still hasn't forgotten the elder Trudeau. The 30's and the name Trudeau will still be the benchmark for bad times
