Why I'm Sending Back My Diamond Jubilee Medal

Posted: 01/12/2013 8:35 am

A few months ago, I received the Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee Medal and my husband put it in a lovely frame and hung it up. On Friday, we took it down and on Monday I will send it back to Rideau Hall.

This was not a light decision. Although I am not a monarchist, I do recognize the power of symbol and know that a great many wonderful Canadians were proud to receive this honour for their dedication to their communities and I felt proud to be in such company.

But the actions of the Harper government in recent months have been so extraordinarily anti-democratic and just plain wrong for this country, that I and many other Canadians are having to find whatever means we can to protest.

Chief Theresa Spence and the Idle No More movement, with whom my organization is working closely, have taken a brave and visionary stand to oppose the draconian omnibus bills that are destroying environmental protection in our country.

Without consultation with First Nations, as required under their Treaty rights, or with other Canadians who have fought for these laws over decades, the Harper government unilaterally gutted the Fisheries Act, the Navigable Waters Protection Act, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and many other laws, ushering in a free for all on our water heritage.

Chief Spence, in putting herself and her life on the line, is doing so to sound the alarm on what these awful omnibus bills will mean to all of us and to future generations. I for one am deeply grateful.

If it is too much for my Prime Minister or my Governor General to walk across a bridge to Victoria Island to greet this brave woman by her sacred fire, I don't want any honour they can bestow.

This medal should NEVER have been given out to civilians. If anything, medals of this nature should be reserved ONLY for military/fire/police/EMS personnel. That said, the 60,000 medals the PMO were given could have been handed out to almost EVERY SINGLE SERVING REG FORCE MEMBER (as an example) - people who actually DESERVE recognition in their day-to-day - rather than to individuals such as "the Beibs" (who couldn't even be bothered to clean up for his presentation), convicted criminals, etc.

I have one, and if it weren't the only thing on my RCN uniform that proved I've done something in my 10 years of service, I'd have refused mine too. Once I'm finished my service, my medal will go back into the box it came in and collect dust until I'm ready to part with it on eBay, because sadly, that's how much signifigance and importance it has now thanks to our esteemed government.

People, please...the 'stand' that she took was not merely sending it back, but it was using that as a vehicle to highlight the disingenous treatment of FN people in Canada. She should be applauded for her contribution to this effort.

My caveat is that I doubt Chief Spence's claims of fiduciary innocence to be kosher. Given the lack of paper trail for an inordinate amount of money, as well as the blatant nepotism, Chief Spence is doing damage to any gains the INM protests have made in this country. She should not be the poster child - it's working against the larger movement.
05:22 PM on 01/13/2013
I just don't think it is right to change the rules in the middle of the final countdown to Harper's agreement to meet Spence... eg: why is it now that she/they want the Governor General etc. involved.... They should have had that demand right from the start... just like Oka and many other Native situations... they change the rules in the midst of the negotiations. I therefore no longer sympathize with their cause. Not saying I will change my feelings about the unclear amendments to Bill C38 & C45... I don't like our government selling the whole country down the river without some dialog & debate before passage of said bills (Hidden in the middle of Budget bills) Scrape the ineffective antiquated Indian Act ASAP & replace it with a fair & equitable real solution for all legitimate residents of this grand country or it will soon be a vast wasteland of exploited natural resources for the profit of a scant few...

They did ask for the GG and PM from the start or did you skip that part too. The Crown-FN meeting in Jan 2012 included both the GG and PM but I'm sure it was a photo op aas the result of that meeting has caused this protest. Please inform yourself before you post. Also look up the word "Democracy".

i fully agree and approve of Maude's very personal decision to return her award. Notice I used the words "personal" deliberately.

There is absolutely nothing "personal" about turning this very personal act into a political circus. She is now using this very "personal" decision to gain some political capitol. Not so noble. I doubt very many people even knew the name Maude Barlow until now.

Good for you Maude Barlow! Our Prime Minister has repeatedly shown how arrogant he is and how little he cares for the opinions of Canadians! I am truly frightened at the direction in which he seems to want to take the country! He is more suited to be the leader of the racist, misogynistic Republican Party of the United States!
