If you knew that [Sierra Leone's Revolutionary United Front] were coming, or if you even heard a rumour that the RUF were on their way, knowing that they cut the hands and feet off babies, you wouldn't hang around very long. And it worked -- it was very successful. It helped them clear the diamond fields, and they could dig diamonds to their heart's content. There are 1.5-million artisanal diamond diggers in Africa -- they produce about 16 per cent of the world's diamonds. So there's a good chance that 16 per cent of the diamonds in any store are part of that problem.
The beauty industry may not be the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to technology and innovation, but like most industries, innovation plays a major role in its advancement. The next time you reach into your beauty bag for the product you've been using for years, consider these unique tools of the trade to help you complete common beauty tasks in a new and improved way.
I am always on the lookout for great tips on how I can feel pretty and live a healthy lifestyle after 40. As far as beauty goes I need all the help I can get. I am most comfortable in my pj's and with a headband in my hair. Which, let's face it, is not the most professional or sexy look. I spoke with one of the top makeup artists Ruben Potrebenko, National Brand Educator for Canada Jane Iredale Cosmetics and he shared some of his top tips for women over 40 to look their best this fall.
Buying skin care used to be about touching, feeling and smelling a product -- and perhaps dodging the pushy sales person at the cosmetics counter. Not sure you're ready to forgo the in-store experience? Here are six reasons to re-consider and the tips you need to get the most out of your online regimen.
I miss my dark skin. I have Vitiligo -- an auto-immune disease where the body creates antibodies that destroy the pigment, melanin, leaving patches of white pigment-less skin, which spreads over time. So when I see girls electively going through various beauty treatments to achieve that sort of lightness of being, my blood boils. It took me up to a year to go completely white, and that was 10 years ago. So for those who voluntarily want to go lighter, I know deep down, even fifty shades won't make the least bit of difference for them.
I had been wearing my hair in a perpetual pony tail for about 5 years now and thought it was about time for a change. Looking in my bathroom drawer you could find elastics in every shape, texture and colour. My hair was lacking its own style. Having a good 30 years or so of bad haircuts behind me, I have an idea of what I don't like and some elements of what I do like. But how do I put this all together into a modern shape for my lifestyle and age?
Changes in temperature, humidity and how you spend your days will all contribute to a change in how your skin acts. Each individual's skin will need different products at different times of the year (or the week for that matter!), and so you should seek products based on the desired effects rather than general skincare ranges based on your skin type.
Too often, as we age, we lose the ability to be filled with awe by the most simple things that surround us, and seeing beauty in its pure state is slowly stripped of all its magic and replaced with doubt, fear and cynicism. It has to fit in a box, have meaning in the proper context and be absolutely practical, of course.
I think the biggest ruse that women try to sell themselves, and each other, is that WE are aging naturally. While some of us are 'maturing' better than others, my belief is that after a certain age most women are actively doing their personal best to slow down father time -- they're just not telling anyone about it.
Every so often, I like to remove a luxury in my life for a few days, weeks, or months and see how it affects me. I never want to be too dependent on anything. Whether it be my television, cellphone or eating habits, I like to change it up a bit and see how my body, mind and soul react to it. I wear makeup to hide my flaws.
I was recently at a beauty-related event where models were used to show off the product. Most of the models there were of the fashion variety -- very tall and extremely thin. I've always pondered on why it is. After all, the models there were present for beauty demonstrations, whether it be hair or make-up, not there to show clothing.
