Twenty sixteen was a year of collective loss and sorrow. A year that spanked us. A year when the news made the news. And so it is fitting that many of my most memorable TV moments came straight from newscasts. Yes, we're tired of hearing about Trump. But alas, we don't get to fast-forward through his presidency.

We see how women aren't taken seriously by almost anyone when they speak up about their experiences of sexual abuse, assault or harassment. As a result, we grow up not trusting that in matters of sexual abuse, assault or harassment, we'll be taken seriously or accorded our proper rights.

No, I am not an idealist who sees Canada through rose-coloured glasses. We're not perfect by any means. We have mistakes to correct and amends to make. We have work to do. But would we ever succumb to the toxic rhetoric of a sleaze ball like Donald Trump? Would we let a dangerous lunatic like him drag our country through the mud, making a mockery of everything we stand for, making us the laughing stock of the world, putting everything we hold dear at risk, turning us against each other, turning us against our allies?

To the women who step forward and tell their truth -- your words are weapons shattering, one-by-one, the armour of toxic misogyny. Know that when you speak, you speak for our mothers and grandmothers that endured without voice, who suffered without recourse. You, as well, may not find justice, but every time you come forward you make the Jian Gomeshi, Donald Trump, Bill Cosby's of this world harder to exist. Even more, you send a message to the Billy Bushes of the world that our culture needs to change to make it safer for girls and women... Join or get out of our way and take notice that our bodies are not yours from which to mount your claim to status and power.
