"Learning doesn't take a vacation." Okay, like most annoying moms, I said it and this summer, I tried to live it. During a family vacation to London, England, I attempted to make our visit a mixture of the historic and the fun (they're not always interchangeable, no matter what my history buff husband says), hoping that the kids would learn something, even if their summer-vacation-new-knowledge resistance factor was strong.
The Queen has not been particularly successful at keeping her realms and territories together -- inheriting 32, but now reigning over only half that many. It's entirely possible that the Commonwealth is no longer particularly relevant to the modern world and will slowly fade away into history.
Recent polls show four out of five Britons respect her, support her and want their country to remain a monarchy. To many, she's one of the last living symbols of British wartime valour, and the embodiment of the nation's resolute defiance of German bombers during the Blitz.
On the outset, Canadians maintain our collective independence from Britain, but on some level do we perhaps feel a tinge of envy that we've lost out on the revelry that comes with having an incumbent king -- or queen?
