Confessions of a New Journalist Reporting in a Conflict Zone

My first conflict zone gave me reoccurring nightmares that I can't seem to forget. In 2002, I planned my documentary thesis for my Master's in Journalism -- I wanted to show the sacrifice of war correspondents who put their lives in peril in the name of communicating news during conflict. It was the height of the second intifada -- The same week I smelled bomb for the first time.

6 Questions to Ask Before Buying Travel Insurance

I made the huge-ass mistake of packing a valuable item -- Luckily, theft was covered by my travel insurance. Or so I thought. The insurance representative regretfully informed me that although stolen baggage was covered, my claim wasn't eligible. It was a baffling and maddening situation, but one that got me thinking: what other insurance loopholes are lingering out there?

Our Private Sponsorship System Contributed to Alan Kurdi's Death

The Kurdis story has highlighted a systemic problem with our private sponsorship regime. The gaps in our immigration regime must be addressed so that families like the Kurdis are not faced with the unfathomable decision of placing their child at great risk in order to save his life.

Criticizing Israel's Politics Isn't Anti-Semitism

Tyler Levitan | Posted 08.14.2015 | Canada Politics
Tyler Levitan

Anti-Semitism is what many Canadian Jews experienced who faced quotas when applying for professional degrees, or who were barred from joining certain golf clubs. Anti-Semitism is what my ancestors experienced in Eastern Europe with pogroms, frequent assaults and massacres in Jewish communities. Anti-Semitism is the murder of millions of Jews during the Holocaust. How can it be in any way appropriate to use this term to describe individuals who criticize a modern political entity -- the state of Israel -- which systematically violates the rights of Palestinians?

The Iran Nuclear Deal is an Appeasement to Terror

What we're witnessing is a tragic capitulation and appeasement of terror that should not be celebrated, but castigated by the community of nations, our politicians, community stakeholders, and media alike.

Expanding Free Trade With Israel: A Step in the Wrong Direction for Canada

In a Canada in which our current government has expressed undying loyalty to Netanyahu's regime, and where the opposition parties appear unwilling to publicly shame the government for its appalling disregard for the human rights of Palestinians, we cannot realistically expect the enactment of state sanctions against Israel any time soon. If the NDP wants to prove to Canadians that it is indeed the government in waiting, and that it's visibly different from the Conservatives, then we should all expect it to commit to taking action on this issue. Will the NDP, at the very least, commit to reforming CIFTA to exclude tariff-free imports of illegal Israeli settlement products

The Value in Teaching Anti-Semitism

Growing up in Iran has helped me to see many similarities between the Third Reich's propaganda system and the propaganda system that is currently employed by Iranian clerics -- they both justify hatred and especially anti-Semitism.

Obama's Well-Intentioned Rhetoric Is Disconnected from Reality

The human rights-interfaith dialogue rhetoric employed by President Obama on May 22, 2015 at the Adas Israel Synagogue in Washington DC was wonderful and made people feel warm inside. But this type of rhetoric is, in fact, messianic -- it is for tomorrow, for a time when there is no more war. That day has not yet come, I am afraid. And to speak as if it has is very dangerous.

When I announced my trip to Tel Aviv, Israel more than a few people told me the food would be a highlight. And they weren't kidding. The bread, the veggies and hummus are all so good I found myself asking, "Why are we eating what is comparatively garbage in North America?"

Netanyahu would shift his strategic communications, his core messaging and narrative, he would now run his political campaign from the hard right of his traditional electoral pool, he would have time to adjust once elected when he would recover the center he needed to govern, but right now pragmatic realism would have to take center stage.

The history of crude antisemitism in cartoons began in Europe long before Israel's existence. That it continues to be carried forward today in Palestinian society and Muslim communities elsewhere is a scandal, one that should be condemned by all people of good will.

Don't Say the Paris Supermarket Attack Had Nothing To Do With Anti-Semistism

Denials of reality about the Jihadist roots of this violence are already feeding frustration in Western populations who know better. The well-intended strategy of protecting Muslims in the West will actually do the opposite -- it will very likely guarantee a backlash against Western Muslims by a growing right-wing movement.

ICC Membership Only Hinders the Palestinian Cause

The PA's diplomatic stunt is a zero-sum game that will only obstruct the peace process and assault Israel's legitimacy. In no way does the Palestinian attempt to join the International Criminal Court advance the prospects for peace with Israel, instead, Palestinian intransigence only impedes its own path to procuring statehood.

The Canada-Israel relationship is often only viewed through the lens of politics, which unfortunately obscures the remarkable bonds being formed between Canadians and Israelis at the institutional and grassroots levels. As the admirable work of the AUCC has shown, there is much we can learn from one another.
