Politicians know they cannot truly say, "We are the greatest." Instead, they say "let us be great again." I heard a politician say that in India this year. These words are echoed in many regions of the world -- it's not just Donald Trump. But which country was ever great in the greatest sense of the word?
Winnie Harlow may be one of the most influential models in the world right now, but don’t call her a role model. The 22-year-old Mississauga, Ont. native has defied traditional beauty ideals by taking on the fashion industry and not letting her vitiligo (a condition characterized by the depigmentation of skin) get in the way of success. But she still doesn’t see herself as someone to look up to.
Hermeneutical gymnastics that equate LGBT Muslims with Lot's people and which downplay the legitimate human need for affection, intimacy and companionship as mere urges and whims are instigated by a deep-rooted heterosexism. The same prejudice allows placing the prohibition of homosexuality on par with the six articles of faith and the five pillars of Islam.
Dear Black Lives Matter Toronto, I approached your booth and said, "I would like to buy a shirt and make a donation," but your volunteer told me shirts are $20 and are only for sale to the black community. What baffles me is you really took the time to tell me I'm not the right race, colour or minority to purchase your T-shirts or support your organization. I replied, "That's not right" and left quickly, dumbfounded and shocked, trying to collect my jaw from the streets of Toronto.
Homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia remain rampant in most institutional settings, including schools, healthcare facilities, and shelters and housing programs. LGBTQ2S youth remain largely overrepresented in the homeless youth population, with estimates as high as up to 40 per cent of homeless youth identifying as LGBTQ2S.
You might know that the number one word associated with being transgender is "dysphoria," a vague medicalized word used ascribed to transgender people to describe how mirrors and people you thought were your friends now make you cry. But another common word I've heard transgender people use to describe themselves is "monster." I knew to expect all that pain before I told a single person. But what nobody had prepared me for was the joy.
I keep my house clean, my car clean and my desk clean. I know that whether they mean to or not, guests and coworkers will judge me and my abilities on what they see. I don't want my guests to be afraid to eat my food, or my coworkers to think that I can't do my job properly because of the way I have presented myself. I take pride in all aspects of my job.
When I was in high school, my least favourite class was English. It wasn't my teacher's fault; it was just that, somehow, the lessons of ancient literature did not resonate with my teenage mind. But I've come to appreciate the relevance of the life truths buried within those classic writings we were obliged to study years ago.
