Samuel Getachew | Posted 06.13.2014 | Canada
Samuel Getachew

For the longest time, councillor Doug Ford has often been uttering one of the least intelligent statements about blacks in Toronto. In defending the shortcomings of his brother, Mayor Rob Ford, he often remarks how "Rob Ford has done more for the black community than the hundreds of black leaders in the community." I beg to differ.

Language is powerful -- but banning another word from our lexicon is at best a token solution, and at worst misguided. 2012-04-27-mediabitesreal.jpgIt's funny. For all the squawking on the left about the need to preserve and strengthen democracy in this country, no one on the progressive side seems terribly interested in standing up for one of the key principles of the practice. Namely, the right of the elected part of our government to make law and the obligation of the unelected part  --  the bureaucracy  --  to respect and enforce it. we shouldn't tolerate the emergence of a political culture in which an elected government's ability to pass legislation is understood  --  if not encouraged  --  to be subject to the veto of unelected civil servants with the most to lose.
