These children practiced their performance to express their gratitude to CARE and above all to show us that even in their desperate situation, they have dignity and hope for the future. Handwashing may seem like such a simple act, but for the kids in South Sudan, it can help raise the possibility of many more birthdays to come.
As a teacher, this time of the year is one where my mind drifts to 'what ifs' and 'how abouts'. Summer is the time of year when teachers are finally afforded the time in which to breathe, take stock and think about what is yet to come. So while I am not ready to cash in on summer yet, here are five wishes I have for the upcoming school year, set to start in a few short weeks.
Unless you've been living in a sleeping bag with your smartphone and a bag of Skittles, you know that there are some pretty squirrely things going on in the world right now. Big, big things that shout out to be shouted at. And smaller just-plain-wrong things that we all encounter every day as we go about our daily chores and chuckles.
