People are talking about the recent article claiming that the loss of a job is harder to bear than death of a spouse or divorce. When the loss of work means more than the death of a spouse, then I have to question what has happened to our values and the meaning of relationships.
How individuals face these tough situations depends on their character and personality. Some are stoic and recognize that they need to make major changes in their lives and their assumptions. They get down to work and rebuild, creating something new out of what remains.

How an organization exits its employees is a demonstration of whether it lives its values or not. Integrity is what you do when nobody is looking. Integrity is also how you treat employees who are no longer part of your organization. Providing career transition support demonstrates that you value the contribution employees made to your organization during their time with you.

Other people my age seem to have "missed the memo" about technology, entrepreneurship, and active aging. They spend hours complaining about how the world has changed, how tough millennials are to work with, and how much their muscles and bones hurt. I try to either inspire or avoid those people.

You can always be fired, downsized, or replaced. Your company could fold. The economy could tank. Depressing, I know. But, oddly enough, it's also empowering. Knowing there's no 100% guarantee frees you from pressure fall in line, fly under the radar, cave to the pressure, and suck it up, all for the sake of "security."

Good coaches have a special quality about them. They are able to get you to a place where you feel confident enough to take on a challenge or comfortable enough to confront an issue. If you are thinking about moving your career along, or are thinking about how to coach someone who is ready to jump, keep in mind the following tenets.
There is an inherent flaw in the sentence "Do what makes you happy." People usually choose their initial career paths around the age of 18 -- does every person continue to enjoy doing the same for the rest of his or her life?Happiness is not my ultimate goal. Failure, however, is my ultimate deterrent. I simply do not want to live pay-cheque to pay-cheque in Canada or end up unsuccessful, a decade from now.
