Though the circadian rhythm is hard to control directly, researchers have learned it can be trained indirectly through diet. By switching the timing and content of meals, we can change that inner clock to better reflect the world outside. How exactly food can change our rest patterns happens has been difficult to figure out yet over the past few years, one particular culprit has been identified: our microbial population.

As the days were getting longer, my kids' bedtime was getting later. "But the sun's still out!" was the complaint, so a few extra minutes here and there, what could it hurt? Oh... it hurt. A few days of later bedtimes resulted in cranky, tired, whiny kids. No amount of sun and exercise is worth that.
A factor that can often be overlooked when dealing with the determinants of one's energy levels is routine. Do you have one? Do you go to bed at the same time most nights? Do you wake up at a similar time each morning? Do you eat your meals around the same time each day?
