I can read, write and speak in two other languages in addition to English and have a strong background in a third. My mother tongue is Urdu. However, my children grew up speaking English. After having many entertaining conversations such as the following with my children, I now realize that English is indeed a difficult language to become proficient in.

Being British is an integral part of my identity. From Monty Python to EastEnders, baked beans on toast to a nice cup of tea solving all of life's woes, I am quintessentially English. And as much as I love Canadians, and moved here solely based on falling hard for one, in particular, I have no desire to become a Canadian.
So it was with some trepidation that I realized shortly after the birth of my son, that this precious little man of mine, was a Canadian. At least, until he started talking.
Contrary to popular myth, Powerball players are, in fact, quite rational and realize that they won't win the jackpot. Everyone's notional value invested in playing a lottery ticket differs. To call the majority of Americans who take small risks in small pleasures 'stupid' is anti-liberty, and emblematic of elitism.
The language and independence issues are where there is the biggest media divide. Satire also differs in each language. The French [political] humour is more cynical. It's more ironic on the English side, more British I would say.

Let's face it: there are some words that have been put on earth just to trip up the masses with their spellings. Words like receive, perseverance, cemetery, occasionally, grateful, calendar, judgment, separate, and liaison -- are all booby traps of the English language.
As the newly appointed Minister Responsible for the Montreal Region, Quebec Premier Marois has asked you to start a dialogue with the province's anglophone minority. Real nations are benevolent to their minorities. Perhaps acting as if you already are a nation may make nationhood become a reality that much faster. Mr. Lisée, give us this pittance. Throw us this crumb.
