Canadians steward not just about nine per cent of all the world's forests, but a whopping 25 per cent of the planet's most intact and pristine forests. Despite everything forests provide to Canada, our collective stewardship of this quintessential Canadian landscape may be falling behind. Canada is one of only a few developed countries continuing to lose forest.
There is another reason why we cannot afford to take much longer to increase conservation and tighten the rules. One major logging company operating in the region is not a member of the Joint Solutions Project. Instead, TimberWest has a long history of opposing increases in conservation and undertaking extremely profit-driven logging operations in the southern-most portion of the Great Bear Rainforest with very little remaining old-growth.
For our healthy enrichment, we must leave the office and the living room for that factory of senses -- Mother Nature. Sure, Google Images and HD television can provide stirring images of Niagara Falls, and yet they don't allow us the true roar of the falls and seagulls squawking over our shoulder and the touch and taste of soft mist on our lips.
