As a news producer for E! News Daily in 1998, I covered the 35th anniversary VHS (!) widescreen premiere of To Killing a Mockingbird in Beverly Hills. The actors who played Atticus, Scout, Jem, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley were there -- 35 years older, but still in love with this story of young enlightenment defeating prejudice in the mid-1930s American South.
This time last year, at the tender age of 43, I admitted to some friends that I kissed a 60-year-old man. My friends, still in their 40s, had interesting responses. One of them sneered at me, but the other was curious. "What was it like?" he asked. "It was fantastic," I said. I've known a lot of men in my life, but I've seldom been treated so well.
Change is often good, but I for one will miss the opportunity and choice of visiting a rental store, picking out a movie and talking with real people in the process.
