You've Been Making Baby Food All Wrong

When I decided I was going to make all of my daughter's baby food, I read everything I could on the topic -- how to introduce foods to baby, the best ways to prepare them for texture, and which foods to introduce when. But the real learning came from old-fashioned trial and error. After years of cooking for my kids and running my own baby food company, I'd like to share some of my tips for making baby food.

Get a Cardio Workout While You Clean

Cleaning. It's a necessary evil. It's also one of the top excuses given when people are asked why they didn't fit a workout in. Too many chores. Vacuuming to be done. Dishes to wash. Loads of laundry to fold. The list goes on. Certainly those chores do indeed need to be done, but the incredible thing about fitness is that you can fit it in while you complete your household chores.

How I Let My 6-Year-Old Fast During Ramadan

Six years ago, I could not imagine the day my son would go into grade 1, let along imagine my son asking me if he can fast. Last week, he said to me: "I want to fast with you and dad. Please, please, please!" I was silent at first, not knowing how to tell him that there is no way I am letting him fast 17 hours.

Summer's Here, So Practice Safe Sun

Sun exposure is no joke. It is not to be taken lightly. Tanning salons and oils irk me with the same intensity as marketing fast food to children. Since 1970, the incidence of Melanoma has nearly tripled, while most other cancers are in retreat. Here is a breakdown of what you should know.

MEND Your Ways and Create Healthy Kids for Life

Statistics show that obese children have an 80 per cent or higher probability of becoming obese adults. Adults who have unhealthy weights are at increased risk of heart disease, cancers, strokes and type 2 diabetes. In Canada, approximately 30 per cent of children and youth are either overweight or obese, that's up from 15 per cent in 1978. That's why efforts are underway across the province, including in your community, to help families live a healthy lifestyle

Schools Need to Lay Off Our Kids' Lunch Bags

When a mom in Manitoba sent her two kids to school with homemade lunches that included roast beef, potatoes, carrots, oranges and milk, she was shocked to receive a note from the school telling her that their lunches were deemed "unbalanced" and were supplemented with Ritz crackers. The school follows the strict guidelines of what many believe to be a very outdated Canada's Food Guide and felt that the "grains" category had been neglected. To add insult to injury, this mom was fined $10 for her oversight. I'm confused, and if I was this mom, I would be livid.

Do Organised Sports Interfere With Healthy Living?

It is perhaps time to consider public health discourse on whether or not any putative benefits from participation in organized sports are largely cancelled out by the ensuing time pressure that not only seriously cuts into time for healthy eating but also sleep and other activities that should be part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

Want Healthy Kids? Cook with Them!

You want to know how to raise a healthy eater? Be one. And teach your kids to cook. Oh, yes, it slows you down and it's a drag but in the long run, having a kid who can cook does as many good things for you and your household as it does for them and their lifelong health success.

Students Must Exercise Both Body and Mind to Be Successful

As a parent, I'm less concerned with the food that's available at my children's school than I am with the physical activity that is NOT. If our school boards think they are doing our kids a favour by keeping them tied to their chairs and computers, they are sadly mistaken. All the professional and financial success in the world means nothing if you don't live long enough to enjoy it.

Healthy Kids Need Time in Nature

Ontario's Healthy Kids Panel recently proposed a strategy to help kids get onto a path to health. Being in nature is good for all of us. The problem is that the path doesn't lead them into nature. People who get outside regularly are less stressed, have more resilient immune systems and are generally happier. And it's good for our kids.

Does Mayor Bloomberg Want Us to Be Healthy or Skinny?

The judge has spoken, the ruling has been been made and our right to drink super sized, sugar loaded beverages remains intact. "The rule prohibits selling non-diet soda and some other sugary beverages in containers bigger than 16 ounces." I have no problem with the government wanting to help us get healthier, but I do have an issue with it just wanting to make us skinnier.
