It's hard to watch as year after year Canadian-based teams fall by the wayside. This year is particularly hard to take as undeserving fans in some southern, hockey-less city might end up celebrating the winning of what is supposed to be a Canadian trophy.
I take full accountability for the fact that my kids are hardly ever...nay...are NEVER able to take accountability for their failures. When my son came out of the dressing room, his first words were, "We lost because the refs weren't calling any penalties on the other team." My husband stopped in his tracks, turned to face our little forlorn, sore loser, and said, "No. You lost because you guys stopped skating in the second period."

Canada is a hockey nation and always will be a hockey nation. But we are a big country with a lot more going on. While hockey is in the penalty box, perhaps it's time to embrace our winners already at the podium. As a country we punch way above our weight in the arts. The question we have to wonder about now is, will we, the Leaf fans, and the 30-man roster of Leaf's players recapture the mutual respect we once had, or will the beast emerge again sentencing us to another year of scraped knees crawling around in the bushes of hockey despair?
