From the Val di Cornia to Florence to Elba Island, here are a few delicious discoveries made on my most recent trip to Tuscany. Some spots do require a car, but if you are brave enough to do it all via Vespa, even better!

Where to Eat, Sleep & Spa in Kingston, Ontario

Looking for a charming escape from big city Toronto or Ottawa? Between Canada's business mecca and Parliament Hill, sits Canada's very first capital. And she's a breath of fresh air. Of Kingston's many assets, I'm most impressed by the cobbled streets of downtown, and the European style of Market Square.

If Buca were a man I'd be totally nervous to date him because he's so good looking. A procession of pizzas go by and I'm staring, mouth agape, right at the goods, undressing it with my eyes, imagining what it would look like on my plate, in my mouth...Buca is a man I want to get serious with.

Now I know I should immediately block this guy. Still... I'm oddly intrigued. My show ends around 10:30 p.m. I check my phone, and there's a message from him. You're my little nasty girl. I take a deep breath, and pray he's just kidding.

The Homophobia In Italy Shouldn't Be a Shocker

I've been living in Italy a long time and the deeper issue here is that there is a concept of family that has just not yet evolved to a point that the rest of the western world may feel is acceptable. But I have to say, if Canada is an apple, Italy is an olive. You just can't compare them. I'm not making excuses, but trying to explain that this is a society that moves as slow as a sloth, in spite of all the genius and innovation it has historically gifted the world.

Having such a diverse group of vendors working with us at Dundas West -- from butchers to fish mongers, bakers to coffee roasters and the most amazing seasonal farmers market -- makes my job as a chef that much easier.

Eating Brunch, Italian-Style

Among all of the North American-esque things that the Italians here in Milano have appropriated, I think brunch has to be one of the most interesting. The most entertaining part of our midday meal was the moment when we realized we were the only people actually eating brunch food.

Last week I had the pleasure along with a few other journalists to see exactly how Tony Loschiavo and his executive chef they utilize their 3000 sq.ft garden in the ethnic enclave of the Bathurst manor to produce fresh food delights that make the palate dance with joy. Located a short walk from the Bathurst Paese, the organic garden overwhelms you at first site.

The Scent of a Truffle

Find a truffle and it's like finding money buried in the ground. Depending on quality, white truffles the size of a walnut to a grapefruit sell for about $200 per ounce. The dealer has disappeared. Deals are consummated outside, around the corner, out of view. I did not see either truffle or euro change hands.
