No Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card for Colorado Shooting Suspect

I recently overheard two people joking about how they could shoot up a place, say they were crazy, then not go to jail.The reality is that a court's goal is to rehabilitate those with severe mental illness. I hope you'll keep this in mind as you read about Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes' upcoming hearing.

Untreated Psychosis and Violence: It's Not a Stigma if it's True

Current anti-stigma campaigns emphasize that most people with mental illnesses aren't violent. This is very true. They also point out that people with mental illnesses are much more likely to be the victims of violence rather than the perpetrators. Also true. But the research is clear that people with untreated psychosis are a greater danger to themselves and others than people who aren't psychotic. People with untreated psychotic disorders have a higher rate of violence than do the general population.

After Aurora, We Should Bring back the Long Gun Registry

The Aurora shooting was a true tragedy. Sadly, all of the guns used in the massacre were purchased legally in the U.S. In Canada, we pride ourselves on being a peaceful and non-violent nation. For decades, Canadians have recognized the importance of remaining vigilant about gun control. But the passage of Bill C-19 -- and the abolishment of the long gun registry -- not only resulted in the loss of an important public safety tool, it also represented a step toward adopting more lenient gun control laws in Canada.

Real Villains of Batman Shooting are Lax Gun Laws

The gas-masked gunman who opened fire at a theatre full of people, killing twelve and injuring dozens more, reportedly had a shotgun, two pistols, an assault rifle, gas canisters, and potentially explosives in his home. What I don't understand is how it can possibly be alright for a civilian to have access to these kinds of weapons.
