As mayor, I am often asked what the key ingredients are that make Markham one of the most vibrant and successful municipalities in Canada. The answer is simple. Diversity is Markham's strength. Professionals, business executives, retail operators and skilled trades persons come to our city from all over the world.
The Ontario government is to be applauded for emphasizing the importance of apprenticeship programs, particularly as the province strives to produce a more qualified and highly trained workforce for the skilled trades and other sectors. Ontario has committed funding towards new equipment and technology upgrades to ensure apprentices get training that is aligned with innovations in the workplace; while new funding has been announced to encourage greater numbers of Aboriginal Peoples, at-risk youth, women and newcomers to Canada to pursue skills training.
There are times when you need to stop accelerating, adjust your gears and realize that not even the best race car driver takes the turn at full throttle. This approach translates when navigating your career too.
Some people may be able to find "a job" but is the pay enough to even cover basic expenses? Are the hours sufficient? Are they consistent? Or is it not only impossible to schedule the essentials of life, but to pay for them? Above and beyond these important, tangible dimensions, do people enjoy their jobs?
Ultimate freedom, waking up late, working in your pj's and taking a spontaneous day off. It sounds like the dream job, doesn't it? Well, if running your own business is that glorious, why doesn't everyone do it? The fact is, being an entrepreneur is probably the hardest thing you will ever do. It will consume your thoughts, your relationships, your sleep and your life. You may never have a "day off" again. Still interested?
Many of us have experienced that moment when we question our career choice and start considering alternatives. It's natural, and our intuition is often right. When it's time to make a career change, a lot of us will hesitate and muddle ahead doing something we don't enjoy. Why don't we make the jump? Because fear gets in the way.

The value of your first job is more than just a paycheque. Learning a new skill with long-term benefits, work-life flexibility, and extras like travel and electronic toys are all benefits. Your dream job search can turn into an unemployment nightmare if you hold out for the perfect position. Especially in today's economy, employers choose candidates with experience and drive -- not prima donnas.
