Depressed mothers are at very high risk to stop breastfeeding by eight weeks postpartum. But this is because depression often negatively colours mothers' cognitive perceptions which interferes with their ability to accurately interpret their baby's cues.
Promoting a breastfeeding culture should not be seen as an affront to women who, for whatever reason, choose to formula feed their babies. We live in a society where multiple approaches are respected. BFI does not advocate one size fits all, rather it advocates promoting the best evidence so everyone can make the most informed decisions about baby feeding.

Why should a double zero model get to strap on a baby-bump, as though it's a mere accessory like shoes or bracelets, and pose in a maternity clothing campaign?

Every day approximately 830 mothers around the world die due to pregnancy and childbirth complications. Most of these are preventable deaths. That's why improving childbirth outcomes was a critical issue at the recent G7 Health Ministers meeting attended by Canada.
And then it hit me: Maybe maternity fashion wasn't the devil incarnate after all; maybe there was something glorious about all these proud mommies grooming themselves and their young to be -- and trying to attract their mates, despite having already mated. The return to work will be made less stressful if you know that there's someone there that you can count on for support and a friendly ear. Ideally, it would be someone who can understand and empathize with the demands of being a working parent and in an ideal scenario, it may even be your boss.

I am now in the twilight of my second pregnancy. This being our second child, I feel more confident than I did the first time around. Parenting is an odd, amorphous journey you take with your children. We have to avoid cramming our own nostalgia down their throats and let them discover who they are and the culture that will inevitably inform their identity. So as I shepherd a seven-year-old carefully around the edges of the music industry, I will also welcome a new person, who will grow up hearing me talk crap about music marketing and false-representation in the arts.
Women in the U.S. are offered zero paid maternity leave, and they're practically the only ones. More women are going to school and joining the workforce but then -- boom! -- babies. And yes, while more and more Americans are working from home, there is little hope that a single shift will alleviate a working mother's workload. The shift needs to be one of national legislative proportions.

As you open up those homemade cards and eat burnt toast in bed, take a moment to think about all the little things--the smiles, the hugs and the freshly picked bouquet of dandelions.
