A gap year is when high school graduates take time off to work, travel or volunteer before they go to college or university. Gap years are common in other parts of the world like the U.K. or Australia, where they are treated like a rite of passage. They've only recently picked up steam in Canada.
Given the state of the world and the tasks of the next generation, our survival depends on how we parent our children right now. We need to focus on the values we are encouraging for our children, and questioning whether or not our individual actions are helping our kids become the environmental stewards the world desperately needs.
Avoid really talking to each other! Talking is vastly over-rated. All it does it force you to actually hear the other's side of things and that can only lead to understanding. which makes resentment much more difficult. Circumvent occasions for pleasantries. Nothing good comes from giving the other person the benefit of the doubt.
People are slagging on millennials for not getting their act together, but the truth is that our economic reality is much more difficult than 20 or 30 years ago. Almost every Gen Y'er wants to be responsible with their money -- trouble is we just don't have any.
