Law Societies in Ontario, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia decided that TWU's law degree could not be accredited because the University excludes gays and lesbians. Why was it right for them to deny accreditation? Because, unfortunately, our society remains filled with hatred for sexual minorities. The mass murder of gays and lesbians that occurred last week in Orlando provides a horrific example of what can occur when a country allows one of its constitutional rights to run amok.
This Ramadan we must be reminded that there are those who fast from intimacy and physical love all the time because they are gay and their circumstances or their mindset make it impossible for them to find and fall in love with a partner of the same gender. Muslim family -- we know this is not how life is supposed to be lived.
I probably belong to "the majority." I've not really ever had to fight for a right. I cannot recall a time when I have been looked down upon for the colour of my skin, my gender, who I married to or my economic worth. My life has an incredible amount of freedom. Yet I'm not entirely certain I would agree that the majority should always rule.
Instead of seeing this man as a radicalized religious terrorist, we could consider the possibility that his ambivalence about his sexuality and his shame about his preferences made him despise and want to punish those people whom he desired. It certainly wouldn't be the first case of this happening.
Love is doing acts of service and kindness. That goodness, compassion, generosity of spirit is a kind of light. And the more light we share on this planet with one another the more darkness is diminished.... We love by showing compassion, tolerance and acceptance as we strive for peaceful co-existence with one another.
Orlando is known as a theme park hot spot, but when it comes to culture, Disney World's home has a surprising array of sophisticated dining, shopping and entertainment options. On a recent trip to the land of Mickey, we saw first-hand that you don't have to be a kid to enjoy a magical experience in the sunny city.
I don't know about you, but this weather change is really getting me down. I'm stiff. I'm achy. All this misery is only leading to memories of spa experiences past. From the massage at Miraval and the "mudslide" at Solage, to a traditional Thai treatment in Phuket and therapeutic thermal waters in Italy... I've got a few I would jump on a plane for.
Remember Tilikum, the orca that was shipped from Victoria's Sealand to Orlando's SeaWorld after the death of a trainer? "Blackfish" shows us that wasn't the last tragedy associated with this killer whale. I watched the whole movie with a big stupid grin on my face, because I know this whale tale all too well, and there it was unfolding beautifully for public consumption on the big screen. Sitting in the theatre, I couldn't help but think of the reaction that "Blackfish" will cause within the industry, the public and the government. And that made me smile. I figure if all goes well, "Blackfish" will sink SeaWorld's captive orca whale program, just like "Free Willy" sank the program at the Vancouver Aquarium.
My husband and I really wanted to take our own five young kids to Walt Disney World. My family had such a great time at Disney, that my kids are still talking about it two months later -- and constantly asking to go back! Here are some tips I will pass on to you, if you are planning a Disney vacation!
