If only Zika was a two-week stint like the Olympics. Sadly, after Olympians go home and the buzz in the Olympic village dissipates, mosquitos carrying the Zika virus will remain, and those living in their midst have no choice but to stay.

It's one of the hottest topics when I'm meeting with my pregnant patients: the Zika virus. Sometimes my patients are planning a 'babymoon' holiday to the Caribbean. Or they've traveled to a country with a Zika travel warning just before they were pregnant, and they're worried. Here's what you need to know.
Expectant mothers should also get tested for the virus if they have visited the neighbourhood since mid-June.

Here's a secret nobody tells you about having a baby: There's a lot of downtime. During the early days, weeks or even months of your maternity leave, you'll be confined to your bed or couch -- unable to move while you're baby sleeps upwards of 18 hours a day or while you nurse him every two hours for 30-40 minutes at a time. A lot of time is spent staring at your baby. Trust me, I've been there -- twice. It's nice to break up the monotony of those long, lonely days with some great TV shows.

I love the child it bore. I am fascinated by everything it did for my baby when she was within and when she came out. I am still amazed by how much weight my knees bore in the last trimester and how heavy a load my arms can bear now. I am in awe of this body. But I don't love being in it.

The War on Drugs has been a failure, and soon enough using drugs will shift from a criminal to a public health issue. But what if we paid people not to engage in harmful consumption? If we rewarded them for stopping damaging use? Couldn't the savings in all manner of costs greatly outweigh the comparatively small expense of any incentive?

I've never been diagnosed with bipolar disorder but I did have anxiety and depression growing up. And who knows? Maybe I am bipolar too and should have been flagged. Maybe if there were more psychiatrists around to help us make a diagnosis, I would have known sooner and taken preventative steps and not have my postpartum episodes be such a surprise to me and my doctor.

One of the most remarkable things about my pregnancy is how I started noticing how women everywhere were being out of their way nice to me. No more sideways "up and down" looks.

I do not presume to know what goes on in a woman's mind before she undergoes a sex-selective abortion. I think that a woman who is making a decision about sex-selective abortion should receive counselling to ensure that the decision is hers alone and she knows her options.

Each week, I sit in my office counselling couples and consulting with them about loss. Loss of the idea that they will have a biological child. By the time couples come in to see me for counselling, often they have been trying unsuccessfully, for years, to conceive a biological child.
