This summer I checked out a few cooking classes, from French pastry in Montreal to regional specialties in Vancouver. Cooking classes are a fun way to find out more about a place, learn new techniques and meet new people -- all in a short period of time.
Ontario's Prince Edward County is world-class touring country. Just a few hours from Montreal, Ottawa, Syracuse, or Toronto (and a free ride from Kingston on the Glenora Ferry), it's one of those places where the trip really begins once you leave the highway -- a perfect place to while away a weekend.
I'm getting the ultimate field to farm culinary experience at From the Farm Cooking School, located two hours east of Toronto in Prince Edward County. Personal chef and food writer Cynthia Peters teaches classes on the art of seasonal cooking from her 1830's heritage farmhouse.
I've spent some or all of more than 20 summers in Prince Edward County, Ontario. What has changed over the past three or four years is the scale and sophistication of the county's tourism industry, turning it in to Muskoka East. But even as a summer visitor, I have to say: I prefer these bad new days to the good old days that never were.
