Although the friends, connections and lessons gained through SHAD stay with you long after the program, it's supposed to be one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. I am one of the lucky few who got a second chance to experience it, albeit through a different perspective.

I was particularly inspired to write on this topic after attending Youth in Motion's Top 20 Under 20 Awards Breakfast celebration last month in downtown Toronto. Canadian youth from across the country were recognized at the organization's signature event, ranging from 15 to 19 years of age. Their accomplishments in one word -- outstanding.

Every July, around 10 Canadian universities scattered across the country play host to 500 students from all provinces/territories and even internationally. Although the program is for open-minded high school students who are not afraid to delve into any subject and become challenged or inspired in ways they never thought possible in one month, I hope to break the stereotype that this is "nerd camp". My program consisted of 56 total Shads and we lived in residence at the university.
