On nearly all accounts, Canada's trade agreement with Korea has been an economic bust. In fact, the benefits of the deal have overwhelmingly favoured Korea.
For the first time in decade, South Koreans voted for humanity, not for greed or nostalgia. Like millions of Candlelight protesters, Moon Jae-in is one of the few candidates who have remained on the side of humanity. As a student, he was jailed for protesting against Park Jung-hee's dictatorship.

I don't know about you but I feel like a real asshole assuming the Asian woman in BBC North Korea professor viral video was his nanny instead of his wife. I didn't even think twice when I was telling my co-worker she needs to watch a hilarious video clip, giggling at how the nanny scoops the kids up at the end. I even wondered if the father would be upset with the nanny for not monitoring the toddlers carefully enough while he was being interviewed on live TV. Sadly, it never occurred to me that the woman was his wife. Now I'm trying to figure out why.

Through inaction we are implicated. Through apathy we are condemned. History will not judge the DPRK regime kindly, but what of us who allowed it to stay in power for so long? What Pandora's Box awaits us with the fall of North Korea?

Koreans had more than enough reason to go out to the streets. They are tired of insecurity and hardship. Opposition parties were often too busy fighting each other. Economy has worsen under Park Geun-hye. College students are overburdened with debt, and have little hope for finding a stable employment after graduation.
Once a bastion of democracy in East Asia, which was successfully restored after almost 40 years of authoritarian rule, South Korea has now become the deathbed for democracy. Since 2011, Freedom House has rated the freedom of the press in South Korea as only being "partly free."

Left out of its December release -- announcing the awarding of the $1.75 billion contract -- was any mention of collusion and bid-rigging by Korean-based Samsung C&T; the ongoing investigation by a Spanish magistrate and anti-corruption prosecutors into "allegations of misappropriation of public funds, falsifying documents and money laundering" at Acciona; and liquidity issues at Petrowest.

"Comfort Women" refer to women from Asian countries where Japan exercised colonial rule -- predominantly Korea -- who were kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese soldiers. Many women did not report the crimes committed against them, but lived in silence due to shame. But a new settlement between the Japanese and South Korean governments is problematic in many ways.

Unfortunately, South Korea still has a long way to go in terms of females getting opportunities in leadership positions. The number of female politicians in South Korea is 49 out of 300 members of parliament and South Korea had a 37.4 per cent gender wage gap, which was the largest gap among OECD countries in 2014..

Education is quite possibly the most important aspect of a country's potential for progress, and, more simply, developing child's mind. There is certainly no one right way to educate and there are, unsurprisingly, about as many different educational systems in the world as there are countries, with most of them believing that their way is the correct one.

If tensions are rising between the United States and Russia, the biggest geopolitical issue for the U.S. in the foreseeable future is China. Why? Because Beijing has adopted a comprehensive strategy with the intent to destroy the American superpower and we call it: de-Americanization.

This will be the first generation of Canadians in our history to be worse off than their parents. That blunt fact is the new reality of our country, where seven per cent of workers are officially jobless (and much more if hidden unemployment is included) and youth unemployment stands at over 13 per cent. And that reality is a direct result of the policies and actions of this Conservative government and the Mulroney government that came before it. Friday's headlines point to the 26,000 auto parts jobs at risk as Harper drives ahead to sign the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal.
The Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board said it spent US$534 million for a 21.5 per cent stake in the company.

If someone said to me 15 years ago that I would be talking publicly about my Korean cultural identity today, I'd have been the first person to say: "You must be kidding." Until recently, despite having been born in Korea, I would not have called myself a Korean-Canadian.

Each and every country around the world has its own definition of beauty, and while I was living and working in South Korea, I discovered that was more evident than ever. The truth is, whether we'd like to admit it or not, aesthetics do matter and have a profound effect on our successes in the world.

By design, free trade agreements tear down the protectionist walls propping up status quo producers. However, even those producers -- at least those who reform, will also find a newfound ability to thrive given increased access to markets with tens of millions, or hundreds of millions, of potential new customers. All of this benefits consumers, most obviously when expensive tariffs on their choices, from Korean cars to Canadian beef, are eliminated.
