For months the government had been in denial over the issue: overblown, isolated to a few neighbourhoods, it said. Since then its approach has gone from "the market will correct itself," to a "bold action plan," to legislating a retroactive 15 per cent tax on foreign ownership.
No government should ever be allowed to take money out of the EI fund, and it may be time to consider entrenching that principle in law. Legislation that guarantees that the money workers pay into EI will be there for them when they need it would give those workers and their communities a great deal of comfort. Our new government has made significant steps in ensuring that EI meets the needs of workers and their communities. Guaranteeing the money will be there for them when they need it would be the next logical step.

Amy Savill went into labour two months early while vacationing with her family in northern Ontario.
The provincial government announced it's introducing its proposed sex education changes. As expected opponents pounced, including Progressive Conservative leadership candidate Monte McNaughton. He gave Wynne the moment she needed to not only change the channel on her Sudbury scandal, but also to get the upper hand on the curriculum changes. There just aren't enough Ontarians looking to fight over sex education or who want to stand with folks who are actually homophobic or genuinely believe evolution should not be taught if people don't want it taught. They need to clear those last two issues up, very quickly and clearly.

For crying out loud, I continue to be astonished with our collective Canadian obsession over the Klondike Gold Rush while northern Ontario's rich and vibrant mining history is completely ignored by the Toronto media establishment, especially the CBC.
I love the Calgary Marathon. I first ran it in 2003 and the only reason I entered was because my brother Peter had challenged me to. At the age of forty-seven, running wasn't part of my life and I really wasn't that interested.

On our first day of table readings for Hard Rock Medical, director Derek Diorio and writer Smith Corindia introduced us cast members to a sprightly, hearty and highly personable woman -- who also happened to be a practising Ontario doctor for 30+ years. Dr. Louise McNaughton-Fillion was also HRM's official medical consultant. And she was pretty cool.
Hard Rock Medical certainly sounded like a very exciting show. So when Derek first approached me to audition for the role of Dr. Raymond Dallaire he said "You'll need to learn a seven page monologue. I also want you to speak the way you speak normally...with your French Canadian accent because Dallaire is originally from Chicoutimi, Quebec." I said "Sure no problem."
Cameron has an obsession with, a passion for, and an addiction to art. So when he enters med-school for the first time, he is coming at it with a very specific knowledge of anatomy. This gives a beautiful palette of emotions and circumstances to draw from as an actor.
As a homegrown Sudbury boy, I never imagined shooting a TV show in my hometown. Now according to my friends, I'm not playing Charlie; I am Charlie Rivière. I guess they're partially correct. Did I mention that all the bedroom and outdoor house scenes were shot at my house? OMG, I AM Charlie Rivière!
The character of Melanie Truscott made a lot of sense to me. As actors we're often playing out some of our own inner-demons, sort of a psychological exercise in living them out -- and maybe even growing from them.
Being a proud Canadian, I am thrilled to be a part of a television series that is unapologetically Canadian. For years I have watched our cities double for American cities on television. With Hard Rock Medical the landscape of the North is just that -- ours.
What I discovered while filming the series Hard Rock Medical was not only was I right in my assumption, but that I had more in common with Farida than I had originally thought or wanted to admit. As breathtaking as the landscape was, I, like Farida, am more of an urbanite...

His songs are funny without being cruel. Proud but not prejudiced. Honest but gentle. They are what Canada wishes it could be (they assign Stompin' Tom songs at school). But, above all, they are great travel writing from a great traveller.
There are things every Canadian should have on his or her "to do" list. Visiting Sudbury, Ontario on a Saturday night has to be on your list, too. It just has to be. Why? Because Canadian music legend Stompin' Tom Connors said so. And even though Stopmin' Tom is no longer with us, visiting Sudbury on a Saturday night is still one of those things you just have to cross off your list.
