I remain amazed by the proliferation of personal devices in today's homes. Therefore it comes as little surprise that the impact of personal devices is hitting the enterprise. Let's face it, you can either to embrace personal devices in the workplace and proactively put security measures in place, or you can deal with the aftermath when employees will inevitably find their own work-around.
Sitting in the lounge of a hostel in Munich, I looked around and noticed most people were consumed, not by interesting conversations with other worldly people, but by their electronic devices. With wifi now a staple in most accommodations, backpackers no longer need to rely on other travellers for advice and directions -- Googlemaps and TripAdvisor can take care of that.
Every July, around 10 Canadian universities scattered across the country play host to 500 students from all provinces/territories and even internationally. Although the program is for open-minded high school students who are not afraid to delve into any subject and become challenged or inspired in ways they never thought possible in one month, I hope to break the stereotype that this is "nerd camp". My program consisted of 56 total Shads and we lived in residence at the university.
Why are Canadian businesses taking so long to adopt social media practices, while Canadians themselves are the most engaged online than anyone else on Earth? Because of the conservative nature of business, Canadians are less prone to learn, to adopt, and therefore less likely to challenge the powers-that-be.
