I was thinking about the old saying, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." I realized that probably it's a bad idea to teach people to fish. Probably it's better to ask them how they can solve the problem of feeding their families, then lend them the money to help them implement their own solutions. FINCA empowers the poor and allows them to develop small businesses as they see fit, through microfinancing.
4:35 p.m. -- Jockeying for the Lindt chocolates backstage with John Hawkes, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy after the Q&A for The Sessions. 9:35 p.m. -- Everyone is here...and by everyone I mean Jackie Chan and his entourage of actresses from his new film, CZ12. One more week to go!
Reincarnated doc, which debuted to a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival, is not an ambiguous experience. The film explores both Snoop's life and his journey through Jamaica -- from writing and recording a reggae album (also called Reincarnated) to meeting Bunny Wailer to his baptism at a ceremony in the Nyabinghi Temple -- all done with a deft and sometimes brutally honest hand.
9:08 p.m. -- Me: "Hello, Julie speaking." Voice on the other end: "Hi, this is Angela Davis." My stomach leaps into my throat. 10:57 p.m. -- Festival Highlight: Annette Benning joins our dinner party for a drink and asks Angela Davis for a hug. Remarkable, inspiring, re-affirming. I love my job.
The day before the festival always sneaks up on you, the office buzzing with equal measures anticipation and anxiety. Now it's time to take care of all those last minute details: fighting with the printer, stuffing guest mailboxes and trying to squeeze in a quick pedicure, a pre-fest must.
While the Toronto International Film Festival is a time for celebrating the best in film (and fashion!), it is also a time for artists and others within the industry to come together and show their support for causes that matter to them. For me, that cause is Artists for Peace and Justice -- a non-profit organization that encourages peace and social justice and addresses issues of poverty around the world.
